Our learning and development offer

The learning and development package that we offer will provide members of staff with an advantage as we are incorporating the new national ACFP accreditation system into our package on offer.

Our case for change is partly driven by the national driver -  the development of new assessment and accreditation systems for three levels of professional practice for children’s social workers in England.

The three levels included in the new national assessment and accreditation systems are:

Approved Child and Family Practitioner (ACFP)

for those who are lead professionals for named children and working with them under the local authority’s statutory framework (commonly referred to as ‘case responsibility

for those with responsibility for educating, developing and supervising social workers

for those with responsibility

for social work services

for children

A pilot programme involving 1,000 children’s social workers is underway and a national roll out is expected to following late 2016. This will be followed by assessment programmes for supervisors and leaders in children services.

Our new workforce strategy will ensure that staff are provided with all of the necessary opportunities to fully develop their skills and knowledge. The strategy will make certain that we:

  • Have a stable, flexible and valued workforce by inspiring, motivating and rewarding staff and providing clear pathways for career development and progression
  • Provide staff with a clear benchmark for standards and expectations that take into account Dudley’s Excellence in Practice; the three Knowledge and Skills Statements by DfE; the Professional Capabilities Framework, and internal documents like values and behaviours, enabling staff to be clear about their roles, responsibilities and expectations
  • Promote a culture of learning and continuing professional development through the provision of a comprehensive training package aimed at all social work staff across all tiers
  • Equip managers to provide high quality supervision and support to their workforce, so staff are competent and confident in discharging their duties, and to encourage a culture of continuing professional development
  • Create team hubs which enable social workers and managers to work closer together to share ideas, concerns and solutions to complex child welfare and protection problems
  • Develop and improve inter-agency co-operation through MASH, LSCB and other forums so that there is a shared understanding, response and accountability to meeting the needs of vulnerable children in Dudley
  • Learning and development
